The one picture you have showing men working under the motel was taken when my dad and Tuss were drilling and blasting an outcrop of rock that was under that end of the motel.  It is either that picture or another where I am in the background (can only see my side) ... my dad always claimed that was my first experience in working with explosives.  From Bob Booren

This was written by Mike Baranowski,

brother of John Baranowski who helps with our laundry on Saturdays

with his wife Amy. John also guided at Arrowhead years ago.

In the Spring of 1946 I worked as chore boy at Arrowhead.

I started guiding in then Fall. My wife Irene and I worked there until 1972. .........Being affiliated with Rapala I was the Guide in the filming of "Muskie Chase" which was shown on Wide World of Sports and Sports Spectacular. I narrated the filming on Sabaskong and Whitefish bay. When the fishing lure Rapala came out in 1962 I had the privilege to accompany Ray Ostrom and Ron Weber in the testing of the lure in North and South America. I also guided the holder of the largest Muskie (69# 15 oz)  and Al Unser, Indy 500 winner. The ultimate to guiding was when I guided two professional Muskie Guides from Harward, Wisconsin.

John Paul Baranowski

Submitted by Tammie Calder on October 4, 2010 - 2:07pm.

It is with great sadness that the family of John Baranowski announce his passing Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, at the

Thunder Bay Regional Hospital after losing a courageous battle against cancer. He passed away peacefully with his family by his side.

John was born June 15, 1933, in Emo, Ontario, to Michael and Paulina Baranowski.

He spent his childhood in Emo, until he started working as a young man of 14,

guiding at Arrowhead Camp for Tuss Langley and Bob Boreen.
John and his brother Mike played Minor Hockey in Saskatchewan for the Blackhawk’s farm team for a couple of years.

He was united in marriage to Amy Chandler on July 19, 1957, in Rainy River, Ontario.

They moved to Nestor Falls, Ontario, settling down to raise a family

. He guided during the summer and spent many winters working on the skating and curling rinks.

He left guiding to work for Ontario Hydro in 1970, working there until his retirement in 1994.

John loved being outdoors, playing hockey, curling and fishing and not to mention running the junior curling league for many winters.
In his later years he faithfully followed his beloved hockey and curling and getting out on the lake when he was able to.

He also loved animals, especially his “grandkitties” Comet and Casper.

He leaves behind Amy, his loving wife of 53 years; children, Wendy (Terry) Jerdee of International Falls,

Donna Baranowski (Brian Bafaro) of Calgary, Alberta, and John Baranowski (Michelle van Hamburg) of Fort Frances, Ontario;

grandson, Dylan Baranowski; brothers, Bill, Mike (Irene) and Dan (Iris); sister, Julie (Howard) Burns; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He will be sadly missed by all.

The family would like to thank all the staff of the Cancer Centre, 3C Surgical and ICU Wards at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, for their dedication and the wonderful care they gave him. Special thanks to Joann and Holly, his two nurses who were with John throughout his stay at the hospital.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at Green Funeral Home, Fort Frances, Ontario.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at Nestor Falls United Church, Nestor Falls, Ontario. The Rev. Carl Emke will officiate.

Cremation will take place following the service with a private family interment at a later date.

Pallbearers will be Dylan Baranowski, John Baranowski, Bill Baranowski, Terry Jerdee, Brian Bafaro and Jeff Burns.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mike and Irene Baranowski, Howard and Julie Burns, Jennifer Myllymaa, Dan and Iris Baranowski, Chuck and Dorothy Gates and Clyde and Decie Mason.

If friends so desire, in memoriam donations may be made to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation or the Nestor Falls United Church, c/o Green Funeral Home, Box 427, Fort Frances, ON P9A 3M8.

Online condolences may be made in care of www.greenfuneralhomefortfrances.com.
